Loook ! Ebony plane !

This ebony smooth plane is beautiful ! It is made by Clark & William.
Ebony Smooth Plane Not something that's normally available. The ebony for this plane took years to adequately dry for use. This plane has a special 1/4" thick tapered iron which is bedded at 55 degrees. The mouth opening is .003". Ebony is especially difficult for plane making because it seems to swallow every bit of light directed into the escapement. This and the fact that marks from a smoked iron virtually disappear make critical bedding of the iron especially challenging. The result is a dramatic plane with unusual heft and a very rigid feel for a wooden plane.

Few wooden hand planes from Rosewood Studio

Macassar Ebony high angle smoother by Ted Brown

Every once in a while it is nice to take the time to make a tool. Ted Brown has just finished this Macassar Ebony plane. The iron is bedded at 52 ½ degrees. This plane is excellent for planing highly figured woods. Note that the figure in the wood was used to advantage – it follows the form of the plane. A Lignum vitae sole was added to improve glide, and durability. The cross pin is made of Jatoba. See our schedule for plane making courses – we make planes during our Wooden Plane Making workshop in August. We also include plane making in Craftsmanship 2A.

Cocobolo compass plane by Ted Brown

The second plane is a compass plane made from Cocobolo. This is used to clean up concave surfaces. This little beauty is left “in the rough” after shaping the upper surfaces on the band saw to aid in gripping the plane.

York Pitch Smoother by Ted Brown.

The third plane is a Cocobolo York Pitch smoother. The iron is bedded at 50 degrees. Cocobolo looks great, and has the right mass to make a fine plane. Those with a keen eye will notice that the wedge is cut such that the grain is in harmony with the plane body – a nice touch.

2005 Best New Tools ---- Veritas bevel-up bench planes

Veritas bevel-up bench planes have awarded for the best new tool in 2005 by Popular Woorking magazine.

If you use bench planes, your core set should include three tools: a jack, jointer and smoothing plane.Used together, these three tools flatten and smooth surfaces, and perform many other workshop tasks. This year, Veritas introduced two tools – a jointer plane ($225) and a smoothing plane ($185) – at complete a set of these three essential planes.Together, they are an excellent value, are easy for beginning planers to set up and, most importantly, perform brilliantly. What’s unique about these tools is they have the bevel of the iron facing up, like a block plane, and they all use the same 21⁄4"-wide iron. This bevel-up feature makes the tools easy to set up(there’s no chipbreaker to mess with) and having the three same-size irons (with different pitches or shapes) allows you to swap blades around for tricky grain or to put off a sharpening session. All three tools have an adjustable sliding mouth plate to close up the throat and a n i n ge n io u s stop system to keep you from damaging the c u t t i n g e d g e with the mouth plate. The jointer plane also allows you to screw on a 90° fence for truing edges of boards, another nice feature for beginning planers. These three tools are ideal for anyone wishing to explore hand planes. You’ll get started on the right foot, you’ll fi nd the tools versatile for different styles of woodworking and you’ll never outgrow them. Bedrock #601 plane

From superior works:
A missed marketing opportunity of the past is now finally corrected. Overlooked in the original production run of the popular Bedrock series of bench planes, the #601 miniature smoothing plane is now available today thanks to the fine team effort of The Superior Works. A #1 size plane was offered under the Bailey design, but wasn't under the Bedrock design. And for good reason - it's a very difficult plane to manufacture with the Bedrock features. Undaunted by the difficulty, The Superior Works took up the challenge. Our pain is your gain. More ...

WOW ! The Scorpion - a big little smoother

Steel gauge plate and brass, rosewood, shop-carved bronze lever cap, recycled half inch fine-pitch screw inlaid with sterling silver and abalone (paua in New Zealand). HNT Gordon iron, with a secondary screw to prevent the unbacked bevel-down iron from dropping through and chopping off toes when the cap is loosened! This is probably the last (maybe second last) plane to be made this southern hemisphere summer (at 4th May), as the days shorten and the shop gets cold! It set out to be an unhandled smoother, but at 3.6lbs was too heavy for unhandled use, so I chopped off some rosewood, ploughed-in a groove, and set in a brass and rosewood spine/tang to act as a rear tote. Looks sort of aggressive, 'sporty' is a term used on Knots, and is real fun to use. The lever cap screw and sculpted cap act as a default front grip, in a surpisingly comfortable way, and it produces transparent full-width shavings with minimal push. These un-adjustered tools are very quick to set up - I do it by eye, not using a hammer (hate the idea of whacking, even politely, into tools made with high standards of finish).

Choosing and Using Hand Planes

Few tools are better for smoothing and shaping wood by Clayton DeKorne

Time was, a hand plane was an indispensable tool, used to smooth, shape, and straighten just about every piece of wood in a house. The typical carpenter lugged around a whole chestful of planes, each with its own special function. Today, power tools — routers, jointers, belt sanders, and power planers — do the same tasks much faster, relegating many old planes to the shelves of collectors. Read on ...

Wanna see a hand plane in action ?

You will see a thin piece wood shaving just comes out the plane. In this case, the person is pulling the plane not pushing. The Japese, Taiwanese planes prefer the pulling action. In most western planes, the push action is the ideal way of planing.

Jumbo Air Plane ! Is it not ?

10 feet long, 6 " iron ! It is a monster plane. Not everyone can handle it at least not as easily as the normal one.

Small chisel Planes !

They looks great aren't they ?Just want to get one like this !

Primus Reform smooth plane made by ECE

Another nice smooth plane ! The sole is made of Lignum Vitae ! It will slide the surface like the ice-skating. It is also one of the advantage of wood body hand planes. With metal planes, they have more friction when planing the woods. It performs very well on figured tropical woods.

Have you seen this plane before ?

This is a very unusual plane as you can see the iron is so thick ! However, it is not on the market. Will it ever be produced for sale that is the question. I know I want to try this thing on the difficult woods to see how it performs. It is gonna be heavier too.
